As further evidence of his family's bad fortune which they attribute to a curse on a distant relative, Stanley Yelnats is sent to a hellish correctional camp in the Texas desert where he finds his first real friend, a treasure, and a new sense of himself.
Holes… hmm holes. What do you think of holes? Just a normal black thing in the wall? Or is it something else, something mysterious? To Louis Sachar, it’s something very different. It’s all in his book, Holes. Here’s a little something about Holes.
It all started with the Yelnats family, according to our main character Stanley Yelnats, his family carried a curse because of his pig-stealing great great grandfather. Every single descendant of the Yelnats starting from Stanley’s great grandfather has “experienced” this curse. But Stanley and his parents don’t really believe in the curse.
One day, while Stanley was walking aimlessly down a street, a pair of nice shoes fell from outta nowhere onto him. Later that day he was arrested for stealing those same pair of shoes which fell from outta nowhere, from a famous baseball player- Clyde Livingstone.
People call Clyde Livingstone, “Sweet-Feet” because of his stinkin feet. Those shoes were supposed to be donated to an orphanage. Later when he went on trial, he tried to explain to the court that he was innocent and that the shoes just fell outta nowhere. But of course, nobody believed him.
He was given 2 choices by the judge, either to go to jail or to a place called Camp Greenlake. Stanley didn’t want to spend time in a cell so he decided to go to camp. You see, Camp Greenlake doesn’t really have a lake. Well, it used to and it even had a small town about a 100 years ago but it all dried up along with the lake. Now, the land around the lake belongs to the warden. Camp Greenlake is actually a place for naughty boys. They are sent there to build character by digging holes - big deep holes. 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep exactly. They dig one hole each day. But to Stanley’s surprise there’s a mystery behind the hole digging. The warden didn’t want them just to dig holes but to dig for something else. Something special which the boys don’t know about.
That you have to find out by reading the book.
